The Value of Position

We'd come up better in all aspects if we could manually position ourselves to be at the right place at the right time. In the jobforce ideally, we'd position ourselves to always be either replacing an incompetent or being surrounded by incompetents. In the game of poker ideally, we would deal every hand or better yet, always be seated to the right of the player under the gun.

By "under the gun", we are making reference to the player who has to open a betting round. Calling this as such could not do better justice to the disadvantage of being first to bet. When every bet or lack of bet is your first obligatory point to 'say' something about your hand, you do better to see what everybody else has planned before you make your move.

Therefore, your position in the betting round must have an influence over your play. This cannot be underestimated. Just as you adapt your style to the type of players in the game, the number of players in the game, and the size of the pot, so too must you adapt your style to your position in the betting round.

Without the ability to position ourselves where we want, we're at the mercy of the rules of the game. In most games, the player to the left of the dealer opens every betting round. For this, I gladly accept responsibility to shuffle and deal; not that big a chore when you consider the benefits. In Stud Poker, the highest hand up opens the betting round, making for a much more unpredictable game. Although you want the best hand, you also want the best cards showing to be on your immediate left.

Without this ability, it's the merit of a sound poker player to take advantage of his position by factoring it into his decision-making. Just as there are no perfect plays for all numbers of all types of players in all sized pots, there are no perfect plays for all positions. Your position at the table is as important as any of the rest of them. Early position makes you one of the first to represent a hand; late position allows yours to be one of the last to represent a hand, doing so after you've seen what's out there.
